33 years ago, in a rural town in the Philippines, a queen was born. He is by all right and definition royalty, not because they were the rulers of that town but because he was going to blossom into a delicate flower adorned by sparkling thorns. Well, at least that is how I'd like to think of my birth.
I celebrated my birthday a couple of days ago. This year is especially different because I wanted to spend the day with myself; no party, no social media, no gadgets - nothing. The plan was to disconnect from the familiar and venture into rediscovering the joy of solitude. Like other plans that I had in the past, this one unintentionally failed. I ended up going out with my closest friends. We headed to a beach bar in Dubai, Barasti, and was treated to an ocean of uber hot, ridiculously gorgeous men. It was game night (football, Wales vs Belgium). People of all shapes and sizes each had a drink in their hand, cheering their team as they watched the match unfold in the gigantic LCD screen in the middle of the tent.
Everywhere my eye wandered, it was met by unbelievably ravishing men with eyes the color of the ocean. I felt what every birthday girl would in a party filled with her wildest fantasies - ecstatic. It was as if the heavens aligned that night to create the perfect atmosphere to celebrate my special day. Though none of the people there knew me or was remotely aware of the occasion, it still felt as if they were there partying with me and toasting to a glorious future. I imagined my kingdom to be populated with these gorgeous creatures and that the cream of the crop will be serving in my court as knights, ever-willing to defend their queen. Well, I've said it before, a girl can dream.
I dreamed a million dreams that night; tales of love, romance, white picket fences with kids running around playing catch with their dogs. Days will always be sunny and the ocean ever so calm with its whimsical waves lulling onlookers to sleep with the promise of a captivating reverie. Nights will be filled with stars gleaming brightly upon the eyes of those who dare to dream - lighting a path that leads to the doors of their fulfillment.
A queen such as I am no different from all the souls who walked and have walked this earth - she has dreams too. She dreams of ruling her kingdom with compassion and justice. She dreams of enabling her subjects to pursue their happiness and fulfilling their desires. She dreams, most importantly, of love - one that resounds through time and transcends social barriers. It has been 10 years since my last relationship. I honestly don't remember what it feels like to share my life with another soul. The length of time that has passed being single has exhausted all plausible benefits of being on my own. While being single allows you to connect with yourself in a profound manner, it does not yield the elation that comes with sharing your thoughts and emotions with another person. It is not merely the validation of your thoughts that one yearns for. It is the coupling of two minds and hearts that while individually unique, are able to partake of life's journey as one, each step synchronized with the other's as if to say: I see the world in your eyes. Wouldn't it be grand to look into someone's eyes and see yourself reflected in them - all your strengths and flaws blending to become the most exquisite rainbow to have ever graced the sky? It would. What of a queen?
A queen, she reigns. The dream? To reign with He who has the keys to her kingdom.
