Queen of Hearts

Throughout history, the monarchy is regarded as the symbol of a kingdom's unity and power. Kings and Queens wield their powers with encompassing magnitude; governing every aspect of their kingdom's life. A king, by tradition, executes and exerts the power of the monarchy while the queen rallies the people to unity. She is the emblem of the people's will and character. As such, a king exerts his rule by enacting laws while the queen's role has been to inspire the people to willful deference to the decrees of the monarchy.

It goes without saying then that a queen is presumed to possess her people's admiration. Being taken as the embodiment of the heart of a kingdom, she is counted upon to exhibit the subdued strength of the monarchy to lend a balance with the king's willful exertion of power. Charged with such duty, her life is outlined by expectations of grace, decorum, dignity and finesse. She is expected to present herself elegantly at all times and be seamless in her behavior. Given the vast powers that her stature accords her, it is ironic that she appears to be fragile and vulnerable. All her powers are nominal and relegated to nothing more than a mere performance.

This queen is no stranger to the same predisposition that expectations bring. In the course of more than a quarter of a century, most of it have been spent on fulfilling people's expectations. Childhood went by reading books and doing homework to make sure that she is always at the top of her class. Puberty's already confusing nature was muddled with even greater expectations because the truth is, we are only as good as our last performance. In performing consistently well, it cannot be helped that excellence is counted upon every endeavor that is carried out. An achievement that is less than stellar is taken as slacking off without accounting for the tremendous amount of effort that was exerted on it. It is made even more complicated by the fact that appreciation of her efforts doesn't come as a result of her perseverance (if it comes at all). It comes as a token of fulfilling the requirements of social graces, like saying thank you when a favor is done for you or excusing yourself when you sneeze.

Thus, a queen's recourse is to strengthen her inner resolve to not be defeated by the pressure of the world coming from all directions. Her respite is found in the moments when her eyes close to sleep off the exhaustion of the day that has just gone by. Well, a queen may also find comfort in the reality that while the scope of people's expectations of her is vast, everyone too, faces some form of expectation. A father is expected to provide for the needs of his family, a mother is expected to care for her young, a teacher is meant to transfer knowledge to students and equip them with the necessary faculties needed for living.

Misery loves company so they say. But is that all that a queen can ever hope for? Find a kindred soul who is equally in pain? I dare to dream otherwise. Kingdoms are built and preserved by sheer will to stand firm in the face of adversity. Our character is defined by how we are able to rise against any and all obstacles without losing our willingness to fight. A war is won not by tactics and strategies alone - they are won by determination. I will not let this world break me with its constant pounding on my walls. Instead, I will hold my ground until it tires itself from all its efforts to break me. It is much easier to destroy. To build and preserve requires a divine measure of strength. Leave the world then, with a legacy that is defined by perseverance. This is the definitive display of grace, subtle in form but compelling in its execution.
